Quick Chimney Insulation Facts

  • Wood, Wood Pellet, & Coal applications require insulation.

  • Oil & Gas appliances are recommended to have insulation, but not required.

  • A minimum 1” clearance is needed from the exterior of the masonry structure to combustibles.

  • Two types of insulation are available:

    Quick Help

  • How do I find out the efficiency of my gas unit, so I know to use a 316TI Liner or an Aluminum Chimney Liner?
The efficiency rating should be located on your unit in a percentage (%) format. If the unit is 83% efficient or lower, you can use Aluminum. However, if it is 84% or higher you should use 316TI.

  • How do I know what size DIAMETER & LENGTH Chimney liner I need?
The ideal diameter of the liner needed to vent your appliance is the size collar coming off your unit where the liner will be connected. To find the length, you need to measure from the chimney crown, on the roof, to where the liner will connect to the gas appliance. Don't forget to order enough for it to bend through any offsets & make the corner through the wall thimble to your unit.

  • What does 2-Ply 3003 mean?
Our TOP-Flex Aluminum Chimney Liner is fabricated with 2 layers of Aluminum. (Think of 2-ply toilet paper!) 3003 is the grade of Aluminum needed for venting low efficiency gas appliances.

  • How do I connect two pieces of Aluminum Chimney Liner together?
You can connect Aluminum liner by using a male/male coupler

  • What if I need more than 50 feet of Aluminum Chimney Liner?
Our extension kits (EX. 5" x 10' extension) are an extra 10 feet of liner and includes an aluminum male/male coupler to attach to the liner you received in the TOP-Flex Aluminum Chimney Liner Kit.

  • How do I stretch the compressed Aluminum Chimney Liner before installing it?
Wearing gloves, simply grasp each end of the TOP-Flex Aluminum Chimney liner and pull; allowing the liner to twist in a counter clockwise direction. All our liners are run to the appropriate footage then cut, so make sure you pull until you have reached the liner length you ordered!

  • Do I need an Appliance Adapter ?
The appliance adapter is a great way to easily connect your TOP-Flex 316TI Liner to your High Efficiency Gas Appliance, Water Heater, or Oil Furnace. Order the same size adapter as your liner. The liner will slide inside the female end with the clamps and the opposite end will slide over the outlet on your appliance. Don't forget to attach the adapter to the appliance collar with stainless steel screws or 316 rivets.

  • What is the difference between a Coupler & EZ Coupler?
Both couplers are made female at one end to accept the liner and male on the other end to fit inside the next section of TOP-Flex liner. The standard Coupler must be secured to the liner with 316 rivets or stainless steel screws. The EZ Coupler secures the two pieces of liner together by tightening the hose clamps.

  • When would I need an Extended Tee Snout & what is it for?
You may need an extended tee snout if the standard 10" long take-off/snout on the tee is not long enough to reach through your thimble in the wall. Available in 18" and 24" lengths, it simply replaces the "snout" on the original tee.

  • What can I use to attach to the TOP-Flex liner if I have to install it from the bottom & pull it up through the chimney?
A nose cone is what you need! It's got a loop at the end to attach your rope or chain to! Just order the same size as your TOP-Flex 316TI Liner.

  • What is the difference between a TOP- Top Plate, EZ Top Plate & EZ Flue Fit Top Plate?
Each is used to support the weight of your liner in your chimney. The standard Top Plate must be used with a Top Support Clamp and Storm Collar. This is the traditional method of supporting the liner. However, the EZ way is with our TOP- EZ Top Plate or Flue Fit Top Plate. The EZ Flue Fit Top Plate is made to fit on top of an existing clay flue tile that sticks up above the crown of your chimney. The EZ Top Plate is made to fit over the entire opening of the chimney especially where no clay flue tile is present. They are both secured to the TOP-Flex liner simply by tightening the hose clamps on the collar of the top plate. The Top Plate and the EZ Top Plate are secured to the top of the chimney with silicone whereas the EZ Flue Fit Top Plate is secured to the flue tile by tightening the screws on the sides of the plate.

  • How do I know what size DIAMETER & LENGTH Chimney liner I need?
For Hot Water Heaters and Oil Furnaces the ideal diameter of the Chimney liner needed to vent your appliance is the size on your unit. For example, if it has a 6" opening where the pipe is to be inserted, that is the ideal size Chimney liner you need. However, the interior of your chimney (especially after insulating) may not have the adequate space. With the use of an increaser / reducer, according to the safety codes, you may be able to go up or down one size and your unit should still function appropriately. To measure the length you need, measure from the top of the chimney flue tile or crown, down to the thimble where the liner will come through your wall to hook up to your appliance.

For your Fireplace, you need to calculate the maximum size flue liner you can install. At the chimney crown, on your roof, you need to measure the inside diameter of your existing flue opening. Next, inside your home, measure the height and width of your fireplace opening. Refer to our Fireplace Sizing Chart to help you find the liner diameter size you need.

If you are relining for a Woodstove, Corn or Wood Pellet Stove you need to measure from the top of the chimney crown down to where you will hook-up the stove. For the diameter liner size, you will need to measure the inside dimension of the exhaust on your stove.

  • What if I have 2 or more appliances venting through the same "chimney"?
If you currently have two existing flues in your chimney and you are leaving the "flue tiles" in, treat each "flue" separately depending on if it is a Fireplace, Fireplace Insert, Furnace, Water Heater, or Wood, Corn or Wood Pellet Stove and order the liner appropriate for that application. If the flue tiles are cracked, deteriorating, or missing mortar joints between them, we recommend removing them before installing a TOP-Flex or TOP-Rigid Chimney Liner. Always make sure the flue tiles are entirely cleaned & free of creosote before installing any liner.

  • What if I have 2 or more appliances venting into one "flue"?
It is possible to have a gas & oil appliance vented through the same flue, if so you should use a TOP-Flex 316TI liner. Depending on how this is terminated at the bottom of your chimney you may need to stack one tee on top of the other and will need to order an "OD" 2-Part Tee. Depending on distance between your units, you have to run a piece of liner between the two tees, you will need to order an additional"ID" 2-Part Tee.

  • Do I need to replace the clay flue tiles before installing TOP-Flex or TOP-Rigid Chimney Liner?
No, our Chimney liners are made to replace the clay flue tiles. They will protect your chimney better from heat loss or gain and reduce your chance of having a chimney fire. With proper cleaning & maintenance you should never have to replace it again!

  • What if I have to stack or attach two tees together because I have two appliances to hook-up?
Your Chimney liner kit will come with a tee. That will be the tee you connect to your liner. You then need to order an additional "OD" 2-part tee. That tee will connect to the bottom of your first tee. (This does not apply to Pellet Tees).
